Data Speed Measure

Data transmission units of measurement. The Speed of your data packets is measured in the following units: MB = MegaBytes Mb = Megabits kB = KiloBytes kb = Kilobits

MB/s = MegaBytes per second Mb/s = Megabits per second

kB/s = KiloBytes per second kb/s = Kilobits per second

There are 8 bits to a Byte, so 8kb = 1kB

1Meg connections can only transfer at 128kB/sec or an 8Mb connection only transfers at 1024kB/sec or 1MB/second, so when you read your data speed specifications remember that there may be a factor of 8 involved.

Generally things are expressed in kilobits and megabits per second, rather than kilobytes per second and megabytes per second when data speed is being specified.

Networks for home or office use can run at up to 100 Mb per second, though some USB networks are limited to 1.5 MB per second speed of digital data transmission.

In the future we will see wireless networks with huge broadband bandwidth capabilities, much faster than your current form of digital subscriber line and more suited to live streaming video and audio, telephony VOIP services and integrated digital communication devices.
